Anita Karwal, the new CBSE chairperson, assumes charge

Anita Karwal, a Gujarat-cadre 1988 IAS officer was honored as the chairperson of CBSE (Central Board Of Education). Karwal, who is Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Human Resources Development, was named chairperson of CBSE. She has replaced Rajesh Kumar Chaturvedi for this position. This happened as a part of major reshuffle effected on Thursday, as many as 17 civil servants were appointed as secretaries and additional secretaries in various central government departments. She takes charge from 7th September 2017.

Chaturvedi, a 1987 batch Indian Administrative Service officer of the Madhya Pradesh cadre was appointed as the chief of CBSE until 15, December 2020. He has now been appointed as director general of the National Skill Development Agency. His term, which lasted just a little over a year, was a controversial one. The government was dragged to court on account of CBSE’s decision to discontinue the practice of inflating marks under the garb of moderation in the Grade XII board examination.

Karwal was earlier the Gujarat Chief Electoral officer, in place of Vinod Kumar Babbar, during the Lok Sabha election in 2014. In addition to this and various other assignments, she has a rich and varied experience, and thus appointed in Chaturvedi’s place. She had succeeded over Babbar as he had quit the post in December due to personal reasons. From Ahmedabad, Gujarat, Anita Kanwal was born on 26th of November. Her qualifications are L.L.B. (Latin legume baccalaureus or Bachelor of Laws), P.G. (Post Graduate) and M. Phil. (Master of Philosophy).

Central Board Secondary Education, abbreviated as CBSE, was formed on 3rd November 1962. It is a government board of education headquartered in New Delhi, located in Shiksha Kendra, 2- community centre Preet Vihar. Its official language is English and Hindi and the website is www.cbse.nic.in. the governing parent organization is Ministry of Human Resource Development. It has asked all schools under it to follow only NCERT curriculum.
