CBSE Science Exhibition

Out of the 10 projects that have made it to the national level of the CBSE science exhibition, eight are from Orissa.

The 10 best models were selected out of around 60 projects at the two-day regional level CBSE science exhibition, held at DAV Public School, Chandrasekharpur. The exhibition ended yesterday.

It was a great day for partners Abhishek Das and Alokendu Patnaik, class XII students of, DAV School, Chandrasekharpur, who were overjoyed about representing their school at the national level. The duo had been working on geometric constructions with the help of only a compass. This unique idea has earned them a spot at the national level. “Our principal and mathematics department gave us a lot of support,” said Abhishek and Alokendu.

Debajyoti Dash, Class VIII student of Delhi Public School, Damanjodi (Angul), was in high spirits after the results were declared.

His project, based on the concept of electrodisation, aimed at generating electricity out of chemical reactions in the sea, to move the motors of a ship without using external electricity or fuel.

“I am happy that I earned a spot at the national level. However, interacting with the other students was a more rewarding experience,” he said. Sailesh Patra, Class X student of DAV School, Kalinga Area, Talcher, was also elated at the end of the day. “Winning or losing was never a concern. I am overjoyed that I got an opportunity to present my innovation and getting selected for the national level was a bonus,” said Sailesh.

His project on windmills was engineered in such a way that it could generate three times more electricity than a traditional windmill. Two scientists — A.M. Srivastav from Institute of Physics, Bhubaneswar, and Trupti Das from the Institute of Metals and Minerals — evaluated the projects. Das said: “Some projects were simply outstanding. Interacting with talented, enthusiastic students was a great experience. “All participants had put in a huge effort.” More than 100 budding scientists from CBSE Schools in Orissa and Bengal participated in the exhibition. The projects were based on various themes like climate change — causes and consequences, green energy, biology in human welfare, information and communication technology, mathematics and everyday life, science and technology in games and sports. Srivastav said: “The exhibition was all about creativity and originality. The students had worked on complex themes. I would have loved to pick a few more models.”

The chosen schools from Orissa are Delhi Public School, Damanjodi, DAV Public School, MCL Kalinga area, Talcher(two projects), DM School, Bhubaneswar, DAV Public School, Unit-VIII Bhubaneswar, (two projects), DAV Public School, Chandrasekharpur, Mothers Public School, Bhubaneswar.
