Vocational Education Framework

"It's time we present vocational education as an alternative to engineering and medical streams. It will not only create numerous jobs, but also boost the industrial sector as a whole," Khuntia said.

He was addressing the two-day 17th Annual National Conference of Principals of CBSE Schools, organised by the Bangalore Sahodaya Schools Complex here on Monday. The conference has the theme ‘Managing Change for Better Learning’.

Under the proposed framework, an admission test will be conducted for students of CBSE schools at the end of their secondary school education about the subjects they wish to take up. The exam would be conducted by 2013, Khuntia said. Vineet Joshi, Chairman of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), said that the Board would take up advanced measures to keep pace with the changing global educational standards. Given the boom in economy, it's time some radical changes were brought in the education system, Joshi felt.

According to Joshi, a recent survey found that students favoured school examination more than the one conducted by the CBSE. "In the light of this, the pattern of exam we conduct needs changes," he said.

On the occasion, Union Minister for Human Resource Development Kapil Sibal delivered adderssed the gathering through video conferencing.

Describing technology as a 'great leveller', the HRD Minister said: "Every other technological invention has been accelerating changes. It can help bridge the gap between the advantaged and the disadvantaged lot to a large extent. It has also ensured that children have many sources of knowledge reducing their dependence on teachers."

Sibal said that it was time a lot of things were 'redefined' and change was managed.
