Students of Indira Gandhi National Open University (Ignou) can now write exams in their regional languages. Announcing the decision on Sunday, the university stated that it was a part of its initiative towards universalization of education.

According to Ignou vicechancellor V N Rajasekharan Pillai, ‘‘Ignou’s student evaluation division is working on the project in coordination with the 60 regional centres across the country. With this, students would get their results faster and conveniently as Ignou recently created six zones to decentralize evaluation of answer scripts.’’ The move is expected to benefit over 30 lakh students of the university.

Following decentralization, revaluation of answer scripts, photocopies of answer scripts and early declaration of results for termend exams will be handled at the respective evaluation centres. Ignou holds termend examinations twice a year — June 1 to June 30 and December 1 to December 31 — for all academic programmes across the country.
